Curiosity has led Felicity down through the pages of antiquity to an obscure figure that she believes to be the inspiration behind many of the greatest turning points in human history. Her research has developed into obsession. Her thoughts are fixated on a man she believes to be the cornerstone of the utopia she now lives within.
To have the opportunity to meet him, she embarks on the next step in human exploration. However, her journey to discover the truth will lead to a startling revelation.
The future meets the past as two souls transcend time to find one another.
Music often inspires scenes, helps mold the tone of a narrative, and in some cases, defines a character.
What follows is a collection of songs that are the soundtrack to this novel.
This song inspired a "deleted" scenario that does not occur in the novel but would be ideal for a movie or television series based off the book. This will add to the experience for the visual representation of the book on screen. Learn more about this new addition below under the "Bonus Scene" section of this page.
There is a scene where Felicity decides to return home to the future. The first part of the song is her deciding to depart. Then near the end, it shifts to a more positive message when she comes back to see him again. This reveals the emotional journey of her leaving, then returning, not willing to give up on him.
At the end of the movie, Felicity and Christopher are exploring the world together, seeing all the wonders it has to offer, doing what was previously denied to him before she entered his life. Now given a second chance, he can now do everything he couldn't before. It is a celebration of their time together.
Introductions
Christopher
Christopher was diagnosed with a heart condition that could prove fatal in any moment. An attempt at corrective surgery would likely kill him. He has lived in solitude, cut off from the world. He knows he does not have long to live as he pours his thoughts and ideas into a book that will one day revolutionize the world.
Felicity
Felicity has been curious about history, fascinated with how one event or person can set into motion a chain of events that will forever alter the future. Living in a utopian society, she is curious what led to the changes that her world she enjoys. This research has sparked her interest in the idea of traveling through time.
Lynx
Lynx is an artificial intelligence that functions within a synthetic replication of a human form. He is fascinated with the theories that Felicity has presented to him and the research that supports her idea. He is skeptical concerning her idea that humans can time travel. However, if anyone can achieve the impossible, it will be her.
Bonus Scene: Not Found In Book
In a movie/television presentation of In a Heartbeat, there is a different opening scene while the song "Centuries" plays as mentioned earlier on this page. There is a series of scenes showing Christopher's birth, the struggles he goes through as he grows up, different stages of his life revealing how his heart condition makes him isolated. Lastly, he is revealed to be on a computer, pans out through a window, up into the sky, then a time acceleration of that region and how much it changes as it moves to a new location where a flying machine lands with Felicity exiting with Lynx. Cuts to her using holographic imagery for her historical research. All this leads up to the opening of the novel.
Hidden Author
Where would the Author make a cameo?
Stan Lee is notorious for making a cameo in movies and television series based off his written works. With that in mind, where would the author of this novel make an appearance in a visual adaptation of the book?
Near the end of the book, Felicity and Christopher are sitting at a cafe in the former country of France with the Eiffel Tower seen in the distance. While they are having a discussion, there are several other people at the location. Among them is the author, who is enjoying a moment of visiting a location he had dreamed of seeing. So, of course, given the opportunity, he's going to be a part of this utopian society of our future, enjoying the sights and French cuisine.
