Sanctuary is ruled through violence and fear by a government of malevolent factions. A horrific death shatters a fragile truce as an unknown force begins to assassinate those responsible for such abhorrent atrocities.
Golems, an amalgamation of machinery and stone, are meant to protect the innocent lives of the community. When they show signs of abandoning such duties, this leaves the benevolent forces attempting to maintain order vulnerable to execution.
Meanwhile, a pair of detectives must discover the truth about the mysterious origins of the city before a threat that will bring about the end of the world is unleashed.
Music often inspires scenes, helps mold the tone of a narrative, and in some cases, defines a character.
What follows is a collection of songs that are the soundtrack to this novel.
This song inspired a "deleted" scenario that does not occur in the novel but would be ideal for a movie or television series based off the book. This will add to the experience for the visual representation of the book on screen. Learn more about this new addition below under the "Bonus Scene" section of this page.
Introductions
Frederick
A community of elves long ago created a gated community for themselves, proclaiming that they were better than other human born. Frederick is grateful his family distanced themselves from their ancestral ties to such bigotry. He focuses his talents on investigations into various crimes throughout the city with the aid of his partner, Theseus.
Theseus
Theseus was born to a woman who hated him. It is because of this she chose his name to refer to the mythic hero that killed what she saw as an abomination of nature. He was orphaned as a child, abused most of his life. He found work in investigating crime, mostly murders. He has yet to tell Isabel of his feelings for her.
Isabel
Isabel is optimistic to the point of being blind to the horrors of the city that she grew up in. She is fixated on the written word, enjoying reading and deciphering languages. She is an expert in her field and works directly for the administration that runs the city. She is in love with Theseus, but too scared to tell him.
Charles
When his body began to degenerate due to the passage of time, Charles began replacing parts of his organic flesh with synthetic components. He used his expertise in development of the golems that provide protection to the citizens of the city to attain a form of immortality. He is guided by logic, not hindered by emotional influence.
Daisy
Daisy is from the European Alliance, drawn to Sanctuary due to its unique form of life known as golems. She is hoping that they will provide the key to understanding what makes an inanimate object come to life. She is a robotics expert, having formally aided in creating a fully synthetic replication of a human male.
Adriana
Adriana has spent most of her life in isolation with minimum interaction with the rest of the community. Her mother was killed by the Temple, her father murdered by an unknown assassin. She possesses a psychic bond with the golems throughout the city. Only through their protection is she able to serve as the leader of Sanctuary.
Patricia
Most keep their distance from a woman with a reputation of being dangerous, one she has cultivated over the years. She spends most of her days cleaning up dead bodies on behalf of the administration running the city. She has a morbid, dark sense of humor, cackles with laughter, and is bluntly honest with her opinion.
Sophia
Sophia recently began her life in Sanctuary as the assistant to Patricia. Unknown to those she is forced to lie to about her true identity, she has been sent on a mission to learn of the truth of the city. Her father seeks the power to defeat a god, while she yearns to finally be free of him, no longer living in fear of his wrath.
Chuthul
Chuthul began a career as a member of the council that guided the city with bright optimism. However, as he rose to the position of supreme leader, he realized the only way to maintain control was to give into the corruption that often threatened his life. As he slipped into madness, he became everything he once stood against.
Bonus Scene: Not Found In Book
After the final scene in the book, the song "Save the Last Dance" by Michael Bublé begins playing. An auditorium where a party is taking place is revealed. Isabel asks Theseus to dance with her and despite being shy about doing so, he agrees with the encouragement of Frederick. It is quickly revealed that he knows how to dance incredibly well. Isabel looks back at Frederick in shock and he laughs. Wanting to join in, he asks Kersh, the ogre to join him on the dance floor. It is then revealed that Daisy is trying to teach Samantha how to dance. Adriana appears to be dancing alongside Lubomir. There are many other guests at the events, but it shows that a new chapter in the lives of those featured in the novel has begun and they are enjoying themselves. Even Patricia is there with a blue drink in one hand and a red one in the other, harking back to an earlier comment she made about the two substances. She's having fun in her own unique way.
Hidden Author
Where would the Author make a cameo?
Stan Lee is notorious for making a cameo in movies and television series based off his written works. With that in mind, where would the author of this novel make an appearance in a visual adaptation of the book?
Could the author miss out on an opportunity to celebrate with a dance? Of course not! In the bonus scene ideal for a visual representation of the book, where everyone is having fun dancing to the song "Save the Last Dance", the author would love to have a moment to try to show off his own fancy footwork while on the dancefloor. Will he be alone, enjoying himself the way Patricia is having fun or will his own twin flame be there with him to enjoy the moment? We shall see!
